Four fine line arrows on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand and wrist showing a small tattoo of four arrows, each with a thin shaft, pointed head and feathered fletching, angled diagonally up the forearm. The linework is fine and even, in black ink with no shading or colour. The hand is in soft focus on the left, with a blurred bokeh background and a patterned fabric sleeve on the right.

The archer's guild had taken my bow the spring I turned fourteen, because my hands shook too much to hold the string steady, and so I was sent to the fletchers instead. Old Marrow ran the back shed of the Tanners' Row, where the smell of glue and goose down hung so thick it got into your bread. He gave me four shafts of ash and told me that an arrow is only as true as the feathers that steer it. I spent a whole winter learning to cut the fletching at the same slant, every vane the width of a barley grain.

When the river flooded that autumn and the ferry men went missing on the far bank, the guild sent word that the old war bows would be needed to signal the crossing. My hands were no steadier, but the arrows I had made flew straight on the first try, and Marrow only nodded and said nothing about it. I fixed four of them to a rope that stretched between the two banks, loosed them one after another, and watched the feathers carry each shaft down the wind where the lanterns could see them.
The ferrymen came home two days later, cold and furious, with a story about a current that had pulled them sideways. Nobody thanked the fletcher's girl. Marrow hung one of my arrows above the shed door, the feathers already gone grey with smoke, and said that a shaft shot true is worth more than a bow that was never drawn.
