Maggie Tench had stopped hearing the biscuit tin rattle somewhere past the Dogger Bank, and by the time the wind backed west she could tell the boat's moods by the way the pans swung on their hooks. Tonight the kettle sulked. She pressed a thumb into the bread dough, decided it needed another hour, and climbed the three steps to the hatch to see whether the skipper had found his stars.

Halloran stood at the wheel with his cap pulled low and a pencil behind one ear. He had been drawing on the back of the galley slate again: a spiral that opened from a single point and curled back on itself, then a second one nested inside it, the way a wave folds over before it breaks. "Sea turtles," he said, when she asked, "find their way across a whole ocean by reading the swell, and they always come back to the beach they hatched on. Forty years I've been trying to learn that trick off a fish."
She had heard the story before, but never with the lamp turned so low. Her brother had gone out on a herring boat the winter before and not come back, and nobody had drawn him anything. Halloran tapped the chart where the compass rose sat in its own neat circle. "Go out, come in. Doesn't matter which way the currents pull you, so long as the curl keeps turning."
Maggie went back down, lifted the loaf from its tin, and knocked on the base. Hollow. She cut the first slice thick, then wrote a small curl in the condensation on the porthole, the way he had shown her, before the next swell rolled the galley over and the bread went on cooling.
