Four outlined squares on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A row of four outlined squares, drawn as slightly skewed parallelograms, sits across the forearm. The linework is thin and even in solid black ink with no shading. The left photograph shows the arm from above against a wooden surface, and the right shows a closer view with a wristwatch on the wrist and a grey background.

Mrs Ada Pickering sent the boy up the ladder with the measure because the vicarage's four landing windows had settled a little each winter, and nobody in Hollowfield trusted a true right angle any more. Tom Gedge had cut glass for the town since he was fourteen. He knew the frames leaned east by the width of a thumbnail, so he cut every pane to match the lean, four parallelograms that looked wrong standing alone and right once they were glazed.

On the third morning the vicar came out in his slippers to watch. He held a cup of tea with both hands and asked why the squares were not squares. Tom said the house was crooked and the glass had to keep up with it. The vicar laughed, then stopped laughing, because from the lane the four panes made a row that seemed to lean the same way as the hill behind them, as if the whole street were leaning into a wind nobody else could feel.
Ada's husband had gone out with the herring boats and not come back, and she had never once asked Tom to fix anything in the house that was not already level. Yet when the last putty was smoothed she stood below the windows with her hand over her eyes and said the light came through slantwise now, and she could sleep.
Tom took the measure down and left the ladder against the wall. When the wind came up the valley the four panes hummed faintly, and he never told anyone that the sound was the only thing in Hollowfield that still kept true time.
