Planet dots and star scatter on two wrists

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are shown side by side, palms up, each with a small tattoo made of solid black dots. The left wrist carries a horizontal row of dots of varying sizes, with a larger dot and a curved ring suggesting a planet with rings. The right wrist has a loose scatter of dots of different sizes, resembling a star cluster, set against a plain grey skin tone and a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At three in the morning the corridor lights on Ward Nine dimmed to amber, and Maeve Dunstan stood at the day room window with a mug of tea gone cold, watching a sky the hospital lamps had never quite managed to hide. Behind her, her sister Alis slept across two vinyl chairs with her coat for a blanket, and the monitors in bay four kept up their patient little chorus.

Boy in bed four had been awake since midnight. Tobi was nine and had decided that if he could not sleep, nobody else would either. He wanted to know why Saturn had rings, and whether the rings would fall on it one day. Maeve pulled a biro from her breast pocket and drew on the back of a blank observation chart: a big dot for the sun, then a row of smaller dots marching outwards, and one dot with a thin curved line looped round it like a hula hoop. Tobi counted them on his fingers. Eight, he said, then said it was nine if you counted the little one that had been demoted, and Maeve said she would not argue with him at this hour.

When he finally slept, she went back to the window and found the sky she had been looking for, the scatter of bright points above the car park that her father had taught her to join up when she was small. She tucked the chart into her pocket, pulled Alis's sleeve gently back from her wrist, and pressed the biro lightly against the thin skin there. Five dots, then two, then one more set a little apart. It was not quite right, but it was close enough to find again in daylight, and when Alis woke at six with a crease down her cheek and asked what Maeve was doing, Maeve told her to look up.
