Four peacock feather designs

Mixed · Flash

The image shows four separate peacock feathers arranged at different angles on a white background. Each feather has bold black outlines, flowing curled linework at the tips and a central eye motif in teal, blue and green. The fills use smooth yellow-green and dark tones, with the composition suggesting a set of flash designs.

Sit closer, the lot of you, because the fire is down to its last argument and I am not getting up for coal. You want to know why Mabel Dunnock never sold the peacock? Because the peacock was never ours to sell. Old Ferris Quaine brought him up from Plymouth in a crate marked fragile, and the bird screamed the whole road to Bristol, and not one of us slept.

By the time the Halloran Brothers Travelling Marvel had shrunk to three wagons and a tent with a hole in its roof, the peacock had moulted so many times he was mostly eyes. Those tail feathers hung off the tent pole like lanterns. Every evening Mabel pulled one out, licked it flat, and laid it on the ring rope for the children to count. Eleven eyes the first winter. Nine the spring the bank came for the big top. The children counted on their fingers and got it wrong every time, and Mabel said that was the trick of it, that nobody could ever be sure how many eyes were watching.

When the last crowd thinned out in Frome, a man in a grey coat offered forty pounds for the bird and the tent pole together. Mabel took his money, then sat on the step all night and did not go inside. Come morning the peacock was gone, the crate open, and on the wet grass lay one feather, its eye turned up to the sky, so perfectly drawn it looked painted on.

That feather is in the bottom of my hat. Not for sale, and don't ask me to show you, because it doesn't like being looked at by people who want something from it. Mabel left the road that spring. The rest of us went our separate ways. And if you ever see a grey coat walking through a market with a tail of green and gold folded under his arm, you will know what to do. Now, who wants the last of the cocoa?
