Blue knit-texture star on upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A five-pointed star sits on the upper back, below the nape of the neck, with its interior filled by a repeating knit-stitch pattern. The outline is a fine dark line, and the stitches are shaded in several tones of blue to suggest depth and texture. The star is centred in the frame, with the head and hair cropped out at the top and a green garment visible at the right edge.

Mary Tregenza kept her stall at the bottom of the market cross, where the rain came sideways off the moor and found every gap in the awning. By the third week of November she had sold all her grey and most of her brown, and the only skein left was a blue so deep it looked wet even when it was dry.

A tall woman in an oilskin came under the canvas on the Thursday and asked for the whole of it. She did not haggle. She paid in silver sixpences that were warm from her pocket, and when Mary asked what it was for, the woman only said that the sky had run short of stitches and somebody had to mend it.
Mary went home that night and cast on for a jumper she had no pattern for. Her hands knew the knit stitch the way a river knows its bed. Row after row, the blue rose into a star in the middle of the back panel, five points she counted with her thumb, each one a little heavier than the last, until the yarn pulled tight and the needles sang.
When the market opened again in spring, the rain had stopped and nobody could say who had bought the jumper. Mary never sold another skein of blue. She kept the last of it wound round a finger of driftwood on the windowsill, and on wet mornings the room smelled faintly of salt.
