Vegvisir compass on upper back

Geometric · Back · Mixed · Photo

A bold black Vegvisir symbol sits at the centre, with eight arms ending in runic-style marks and a circle at the top left. Fine teal linework swirls around the centre and between the arms, adding a light colour accent to the solid black ink. The design is centred on a plain, lightly freckled area of upper back shown straight on.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gale had blown three days when Ingrid Holt came down the cliff path with a sack of salt cod and found the boarding house door already open. Her grandmother's compass hung on its nail by the stove, the brass ring gone green at the edges, and beneath it someone had pinned a scrap of paper with eight arms drawn in pencil. Nobody in Skarra Cove had drawn a compass like that since the old men died.

The lodger in the top room was called Thorvald Dune, or so the ledger said, and he had paid for six weeks in silver before the storm. He took his meals at the window and asked only that the sea be watched. When Ingrid asked what he watched for, he pointed at the circle drawn at the top of his paper and said the boats always came home when the arm marked with a little ring pointed at the chapel. She laughed and told him the chapel had no bearing on anything. He only nodded and kept his finger on the ring.

On the fourth morning the wind dropped and the water lay flat as a slate. Out past the reef, a dory showed its red sail, low in the water, its two men pulling at the oars. Thorvald was already on the cliff path with his coat undone. He counted the boats on the fingers of one hand, then pointed the way his drawing did, and the men in the dory turned their bow toward the harbour mouth as if someone had called them.

That night Ingrid took the compass down and found the paper gone from under it. In its place, on the nail, hung a fine blue thread tied in a knot, and the thread, when she tugged it, smelled of the sea.
