Four portrait faces with thank you lettering
Traditional · Back · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows four female faces drawn in bold black outlines, set side by side above a row of pine trees. The words Thank you above and For being a friend below are in black letters with some shadowing. Soft washes of pink, orange and green fill the faces, hair and background, with the skin tone showing through.

Dear Jean, Sheila and Irene,
Keep reading
I am writing this at the kitchen table with my reading glasses on the end of my nose and a cup of tea gone cold beside me, because Dorothy's granddaughter is still asleep upstairs in the spare room and I have decided I am too old to wait for the kettle to recover. You will all remember that Sheila insisted on the Scots pine at the back of the hotel car park, the one she said looked like a bottle brush. Well, I stood under it at half past one this morning with my shoes in my hand, and it was the only thing in Dorset that stayed put.
You can't say I didn't warn you about the speeches. Irene, you cried before the bride had even reached the aisle, and then you cried harder when the best man got the name of the village wrong. Jean, you told the vicar his hymn choices were a crime. Sheila sat there with her handbag on her knee like a referee. Nobody in that room was sober enough to take offence, which is the way it should be at a wedding.
The thing is, when the band played the old one we used to dance to in Mrs Pemberton's front room, the four of us ended up in a row by the bar, arms round each other, singing the chorus far too loudly. A young waiter came over and asked if we were the bride's mothers. I said we were the committee, and Sheila said we were the reason the hotel had a licence.
I keep thinking about the photograph the photographer took of us by the pines. Somebody will have to frame it, and I want the one where Irene is pulling a face and Sheila is pretending not to be pleased. Write back soon, and bring the good biscuits next time.
Love, Vi
