Two pin-up women with hearts on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
Two stylised pin-up women stand side by side, one in a polka dot dress and one in a dark dress, with black hearts and radiating sunburst lines above their heads. The bold black outlines are filled with grey shading on the dark dress and hair, with small areas of rainbow colour on both belts. The design is centred on the skin with plenty of space around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mae had pinned the hem of the dark dress twice before the Saturday dance, and still Dolly said it sat better on her than it ever would on Mae. They stood in the cloakroom of the Miners' Welfare with the ceiling bulb throwing a crooked halo over their heads, the way it did over every coat hook in Ashdale. Dolly was fastening the belt Mae had bought in Barnsley, a strip of rainbow ribbon stitched under the buckle, and Mae pretended not to notice her fingers shaking.

Outside, the band had started on something slow. Men in their Sunday shirts leaned at the bar with the particular stiffness of shifts that ended at two. Dolly had promised her mother she would not dance past ten. Mae had promised nothing, which was why she had been asked twice by Tommy Greaves from the lamp room, and had said no both times while Dolly laughed behind her glass.
At quarter to ten Dolly took her hand and walked her to the middle of the floor, the polka dots swinging, and announced loudly enough for the whole hall, "She's the one who can really step, Tommy, so you'd best ask her properly." Mae's face went hot. Tommy asked. She said yes before she could think of a reason not to.
When the record ran out, Dolly was already back at the cloakroom mirror, lipstick in hand, drawing a small black heart on the glass where the steam had cleared. Mae came in and saw it. She took the lipstick, drew a second heart beside the first, and neither of them said a word about it, because there was nothing in Ashdale that needed saying.
