Cartoon character on a wrecking ball, calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A cartoon character with a large nose, pink lips and blonde hair sits on a grey wrecking ball with a crying face, gripping a chain that runs up the design. The character holds a red sign with lettering that is only partly legible. Bold black outlines and flat, saturated colour fills sit over soft shading on the skin, with a few purple wash accents behind the figure.

Nobody on the Ardwick site had ever read the red board hanging off the chain, because the rain had eaten most of its letters before Dessie Crane bought the ball at auction. What remained was a rusted O, an L and a Y, and a painted woman with a nose like a bread roll, perched on top of the iron with one hand gripping the links as if she'd been told to hold on for a bet. The lads called her Mavis and left it at that.

The ball itself wept. Every time it swung into a wall, a grey bead of water ran from the painted eye and dripped onto the rubble, and the crew swore it was oil leaking from the chain. Dessie didn't believe that. He believed Mavis was sulking, and he could hardly blame her. She had a clear view of the cracked council flats on Gorton Lane, the ones the ball was meant to flatten, and she did not look like a woman who thought they deserved it.
On the last Friday the flats came down in a brown cloud, and the ball rolled back against the fence and stopped. Dessie climbed up with a rag to wipe the dust off the sign, half expecting nothing, and the letters came up under his thumb: LOYAL, and beneath it in smaller capitals, TO THE TENANTS. He stood on the iron for a long minute while the dust settled on his boots. The weeping had stopped, and the crying face looked, for the first time, like it had simply been waiting to be asked.
