Black and grey realism tattoos of four women's portraits above Stay Gold lettering in blackletter across both thighs.

Four portraits and Stay Gold lettering on thighs

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Two thighs are covered by a pair of tattoos, each showing two smiling women's portraits, with the lettering Stay Gold beneath them in a blackletter style. The faces are rendered in soft grey shading with fine detail in the hair and skin tones. The ink is entirely black and grey, and the framing is close, with the lettering sitting at the base of each portrait group.

The dryer by the window had been broken since March, so the four of us ended up sharing the working one at half eleven on a Tuesday, our feet up on upturned crates while a bag of pear drops went round like a collection plate. Maureen had brought her late husband's cardigans in a carrier bag, which she claimed were only for the spin, though nobody believed her. Pat provided the commentary. Ivy said nothing and folded everything twice.

Hazel was the one who had first sat in the plastic chair with a suitcase on her knees, saying she was leaving the bungalow for good and wouldn't be apologising to the man at the council. Nobody had asked her to stay. They had simply turned up, every Tuesday, with their own washing and their own opinions, until the place felt less like a launderette and more like a kitchen with too many machines in it.

That night Hazel announced she had a flight to Malaga on Friday. The drum thumped in the silence while nobody spoke. Then Ivy dug a tin of travel toffees out of her handbag, the caramel ones nobody liked, and pressed it into Hazel's hands. Stay gold, she said, which was a thing her grandson had painted on a skateboard, and they all laughed until Pat had to take off her glasses and wipe them on a sock.

When the buzzer went, Hazel lifted the warm towels out one by one and held them against her chest. Through the glass the streetlights on the main road were the colour of weak tea, and the four of them stood a moment longer than the job required, watching the drum turn with nothing left inside it but the light.
