Four simple shape tattoos on fingers

Geometric · Hand · Colour · Photo

Four small outline shapes sit on the middle segments of four fingers of a curled hand: a triangle, a circle, a cross and a square. The lines are thin and slightly uneven, and each shape is drawn in a different colour, with green, red, blue and purple visible. The hand fills the frame against a grey pavement, with the shapes placed in a row across the fingers.

The pad had been in the drawer since the autumn Gran moved into the flat above the chemist, and nobody had touched it until Ruth went looking for something to throw at her brother. Tomasz had beaten her eleven times running, each time by the same trick of tapping square when she meant to press cross, and she had come to believe he was cheating with his thumb.

She dragged the cable across the carpet and found the switch with her heel. The television flickered on in the middle of a weather map. Tomasz was already sitting cross-legged on the far side of the rug, pretending not to be nervous, his knuckles pale round the pad. "Best of nine," he said. "Loser makes the tea for a week."

They played until the streetlight outside came on and the kettle had boiled twice and gone cold. Ruth lost the first four rounds on purpose, to lull him, then won the next three with a sharp circle that sent a little plastic car spinning into a ditch. At seven all he stopped talking. She could see him counting the buttons under his breath, as if they might shift position if he looked away.

The last race came down to a hairpin where both of them had frozen. Neither moved. Ruth pressed triangle, very gently, and the car lurched over the line by the width of a wheel. Tomasz set the pad down on the carpet, stood up, and went to fill the kettle. "Three weeks," he said, not turning round. She did not bother to correct him.
