Small pink triangle on a finger
Geometric · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of a hand with a small equilateral triangle tattooed on the side of one finger, between two knuckles. The triangle has a solid pink fill and a thin black outline with simple, even linework. The hand rests on a dark, glossy surface, and a red ring is visible on another finger at the right edge.

Nan had the drawer of offcuts open before the vicar had finished his tea, and the kitchen smelled of cold putty and vinegar. I was nine and allowed to hold the rule. Every piece she cut for the window was a triangle, because a triangle, she said, was the only shape that would not slide out of its lead once it was seated.

The window was in the chapel where Uncle Derek and Maureen were to be married in March. Half the panes had gone to dust in the frost, and the rest were the colour of weak tea. Nan had found a pink sheet in a skip outside a shop in Margate that had closed, pale as the inside of a shell. She wanted one triangle of it set low in the corner, where a child kneeling in the pew would see it and nobody standing would think to look.
On the morning of the wedding the rain stopped at the exact minute the bride stepped out of the car, and the light came through the old glass and landed, of all places, on the pink. Maureen stopped on the path. Nan said nothing. She tapped my shoulder and pointed with her chin.
Afterwards I asked why she had put it there. She lifted her shoulders and said a triangle with one edge down holds its weight, and a pink one holds the eye. I have kept that little rule ever since, and three different people have told me I am too fond of straight lines.
