Four small fine line tattoos in a collage
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
This four-panel collage shows small tattoos on different parts of the body. The panels include a crown, a lightning bolt and a lightbulb, a triangle with a circle and vertical line inside it framed by ornate scrollwork with a quotation beneath, a lightning bolt above round glasses, and the words all was well in cursive script. The linework is thin and the ink is solid black with no shading, and the tattoos are set against plain skin with a black lace garment visible in one panel.

The lamp you left on the hook has gone dark twice this week, so I carried it down to Mr Pollock in the lamp room myself. He says the glass is sound and it is only the wick that's tired, and he has promised to see to it before your Monday shift, so you will have it for the back gate.
Your mam wants you to know the spectacles came back from the optician in Ashby with the left arm mended using a bit of brass wire. Dolly says they make you look like a clockmaker and you are not to let the lads at the Welfare take the mickey. She has also started a jar on the mantel for the coins you would otherwise spend on tobacco, and she counts it every Friday with the air of a magistrate.
On Sunday, after service, I stood under the new iron gable on the chapel and looked at the triangle someone has set into it, with a circle in the middle and a straight line through the circle, all wrapped in curls like the ironwork on the winding house gate. Above it the pit fan threw a jag of light across the sky, and the electric company's new bulbs were humming in the lane. I thought of you on the cage when the power dipped last month. I did not sleep well for it, and I still don't.
Come home at the end of the fortnight if they will spare you. Write me the day you're coming so I can put the kettle on early. Tell Dolly the jar is not for her.
All was well here when I last looked, and I am keeping it that way for you.
Love, Nan
