Round glasses and lightning bolt on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline tattoo of round spectacles with a lightning bolt above them, sitting on the inner wrist or lower forearm. The linework is thin and even, with some lighter shading inside the right lens. The photograph is black and white, so the composition shows only the skin and tattoo against a blurred, patterned background.

The spectacles come to you in a sack of wet barley, wrapped in a page torn from an old tide almanac, and the lenses are still cold from the river. Nobody in the lowlands of Coll grinds glass that round. On the rim, someone has scratched a bolt of lightning with a nail, and beneath it, in careful capitals, is a line saying they were made so the wearer could see the storm coming.

You take them up to the harbour tower where old Brannoch keeps his brass telescopes. He settles the arms over your ears himself, fussing with the hinges, and the gulls on the mast slide into focus one by one. Out past the breakwater, the sky above the Drowned Shires has the colour of a bruise, and a line of white light stitches the cloud to the sea. You count. Seven, eight, nine, and then the thunder arrives.
Brannoch says the glasses belonged to a surveyor who mapped the sunken road and never came back. He says the lenses were tempered in the same kiln as the lighthouse lamp, and that whoever wears them can read a squall before it breaks. You do not believe him, not entirely, but the glass tingles against your temples each time the next flash splits the water.
At dusk you row out alone with the spectacles in your breast pocket while the fleet ties up behind you. You hold them up to the last of the light and see, for a moment, a thin silver thread running from the bottom of the sea to the underside of the clouds. You tilt your head and follow it home.
