Two photos: fine-line black script reading 'We're all stories in the end' across the upper back near the shoulder, and a bold black Deathly Hallows symbol with Mickey Mouse ears tattooed on skin.

Script quote and Deathly Hallows with mouse ears

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The top photo shows the words 'We're all stories in the end' in thin, black, cursive-style script running across the upper back near the shoulder. The bottom photo shows a bold black solid-line Deathly Hallows symbol, a triangle enclosing a circle and vertical line, with two round shapes forming Mickey Mouse ears on top. Both pieces are in black ink on skin, with no colour, and the composition is a close crop of each area.

Sit closer to the grate, because the snow has shut the road past Hawes and you will be here until morning. Mrs Pargeter, who kept the Stag and Lantern for forty winters, never told a tale without first checking the cellar bolts. Her grandson had brought three things home from the Low Countries in a tin box: a stick of grey driftwood, a river stone with a hole worn clean through it, and a cloak the colour of wet slate. He could never make them agree with one another, and she said so, loudly, every January.

The tin lid carried a child's drawing, a triangle with a ruled line through it and a ring inside, and two round ears stuck on top as if the whole thing had wandered in from a nursery wall. Tobias thought it was a joke someone had played on him at the docks. Mrs Pargeter thought it was the only honest part of the lot. Each night he laid the stick across the stone, then folded the cloak over both, and each night the lamp guttered and the bread went stale and nothing else happened at all.

On the last night of the great storm the power went out, and he finally sat down in the dark and held the three things in his lap. The cloak slipped off. The stone rolled under the settle. Tobias went after it on his knees and found the stick was already lying where the drawing said it should be, as though it had been waiting for someone to stop trying.

When the lamp came back she was standing in the doorway with a candle, watching him. "We're all stories in the end," she said, and went to check the bolts again.
