Small black fine line tattoo of round glasses with a lightning bolt above them, on the inner forearm.

Round glasses and lightning bolt on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a pair of round-framed glasses with a small zigzag lightning bolt above the bridge, drawn in thin, even black linework. It sits on the forearm against pale skin, with a black chair and white sneaker visible in the frame. The image is composed in a casual snapshot style with the tattoo centred and the background softly out of focus.

The wire frames arrived in a biscuit tin, wrapped in a grey school jumper. Fenwick tipped them onto the bench under the lamp and saw at once that the left lens had split in a fine zigzag from the rim toward the bridge, as if someone had drawn the storm across it with a pencil.

The woman who brought them, Mrs Dunmore from the terrace behind the chapel, said her grandson had been up on the moor the night the lightning took the weathervane. He came home soaked and shaking and would not take the glasses off for a week. She wanted them mended before he went back to school on Monday. Fenwick asked how a lens cracks like that. She said it didn't crack. It was simply there one morning, as though it had been waiting.

He spent Saturday on it. He cut a blank from the drawer of old lenses, warmed the bridge over the spirit burner so the wire would give, and fitted the new round glass three times before the frame sat true. He left the faint scorch mark on the hinge alone, because it was the sort of thing a boy would want to keep, and because Fenwick had spent forty years learning which damage was worth fixing.

On Monday the boy came in with his mother, pushed the frames up his nose and looked out at the street, where rain was starting on the cobbles. He said everything looked a little sharper. Fenwick said that was only the new glass. The boy shrugged, thanked him, and ran out ahead of his mother, the spectacles catching the grey light once as he turned the corner toward the school gates.
