The fishermen of Skerrow Ness swore the stars came down the night the tide went out and never came back in. Four of them, one after another, like lamps carried down a stair. Ada Mackie walked the shingle at first light and found the largest lying in the bracken above the high-water mark, green as new bracken and speckled all over with black rosettes, as if it had rolled in a leopard's coat and kept the fur.

The second was black as the inside of a kettle and cold enough to frost her palm. The third was green too, but soft, fading to moss at its points. The smallest was black again and no bigger than a thimble. Ada carried them home in her apron, wrapped in a scrap of sailcloth, and set them along the windowsill where the lamp could reach them. Her brother Tam said they belonged up in the dark where the boats could see them. Ada said a star that had come all this way could decide for itself.

They argued all winter. The big one wanted the sea smoothed flat so it could admire its own spots in the water. The black pair said nothing and simply grew heavier on the sill each morning. Ada noticed that the little one shifted a finger's width closer to the door every night, and that the soft green one had started to lean toward the glass like a plant seeking light.

On the first still night of spring, she opened the door and let them go. They rose one after another, the smallest last, and took their places in the sky in a crooked line falling toward the sea. Tam says he saw the big one wink. Ada says it was only the spots in it stretching. On clear nights you can still find them from the harbour wall, tracing the same slope down towards the water, as though they were only going home the long way round.
