Galaxy cat on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A cat's face in three-quarter view, with bright green and blue eyes, pink nose and long white whiskers, sits at the centre of the design. The cat is rendered with soft, painterly shading and sparkling star-like dots, and it blends into a loose cloud of purple, pink, teal and green that fades out towards the edges. The photograph is taken straight on at the outer thigh, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Brother Osric had been trying for three days to paint a sky that would stop looking like a bruise. The vellum lay flat on the slope of his desk in the scriptorium at Saint Brannoc's, and every wash of indigo he laid down dried dull by evening. Vespers came and went. Behind him, the grey cat that belonged to nobody slept on the psalter stand with one paw tucked under her chin.

On the fourth morning she woke, stretched, and walked straight across the wet page. Osric shouted. Prior Gilles came up the stairs with his sleeves rolled, ready to be cross, and stopped. Where her pads had touched the wash, the colour had bloomed: violet spreading into rose, a thread of teal running off towards the margin like a comet's tail. Where she had sat down, the pigment had gathered into a soft cloud that glittered where the gold leaf dust had settled.
The prior wanted the page scraped and the animal sent down the hill to the mill. Osric said nothing. He picked up the finest brush he owned, dipped it in the green that had been drying in its shell for a week, and painted two eyes into the cloud where a face should be, one green and one blue, the way she had looked at him over the stand that morning. Then he added whiskers, long and pale, and a scatter of white stars along the edges.
When Gilles looked again, the cat was no longer on the stand. She sat in the middle of the page, face turned three-quarters towards the window, and the sky around her was the colour of something alive. Osric never finished the psalter. He said it was finished anyway.
