Two cats in a pearl heart on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a black cat and a brown tabby cat facing each other, noses almost touching, with their eyes closed. They sit inside a heart outlined in grey and white pearls, with a teal background stippled with dots and pink five-petal flowers with yellow centres and green leaves around the edge. The bold black outlines, smooth shading and bright saturated colour are typical of neo-traditional work, and the design is shown on the outer thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The queen's pearls went missing on the feast night of Saint Oriel, and by the second bell the whole of Vellmere Court had decided the black cat was to blame. Soot had been seen on the balustrade above the throne room, which was true, and again on the kitchen stair, which was also true, because the kitchen stair was where the fish was kept. Nobody asked what Soot had been doing on the balustrade. Nobody in Vellmere ever did.

Mirren, the tabby who kept the archive mice in order, found the string under the great tapestry where the dust lay thickest. Forty pearls, grey and white, and one of them cracked. She carried them along the sill of the long gallery to the window where Soot sat in the cold moon, washing one paw as though the matter did not concern him.

"They'll hang you from the weathervane," Mirren said. "Or they'll hang me for keeping quiet about it."

Soot looked at the pearls, then at her, and his eyes narrowed to nothing. He leaned across the gap between them until their noses almost touched, and they stayed like that a long while, neither of them quite willing to be the first to look away. When Mirren finally settled the string around her own neck, Soot settled his beside it, so that when the steward came up the stair with his lantern there were two thieves on the sill and no way to tell which one had taken what.

The steward raised his lamp, counted the pearls twice, and went down again without a word. By morning there was a saucer of cream on the gallery step, and nobody at court ever mentioned the balustrade again.
