Fox creature with flame tails on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A fox-like creature with a round face, large dark eye and pointed ears is shown in side view, with several curling orange tails behind it. Bold black linework outlines the figure and the tails, with soft orange and yellow washes and dark splatter marks around the edges. The design sits centrally on the skin and fills most of the frame.

It was a fox, small enough to sit in a boot, with a round face and one eye so wide and black it seemed to hold the whole pass. Behind her, five or six tails rose and curled like smoke that had decided to be solid, and where they brushed the frost, the frost hissed and ran off as water. She watched me the way a shopkeeper watches a man who has counted his change twice.
My grandmother had told me the old foxes of these hills kept their fire in their tails and lent a single flame to anyone who was lost. I had called it nonsense for forty years. I held out my lantern, and she sniffed at it, unimpressed, then turned and trotted up the path, stopping at each bend to look back until I followed.
At the top of the pass the storm had stopped as though someone had closed a door. She sat down beside a stone marked with a faded red hand, and one tail came to rest across my boot. The warmth went all the way up to my knee. When I looked again she had gone, and only a few black cinders lay on the snow, cooling in neat little circles like coins dropped from a pocket.
