Worn stuffed rabbit on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A stuffed toy rabbit with a button eye, patched and stitched seams, and floppy ears fills the forearm, shown from the side with its head turned. The rabbit is outlined in fine dark linework and filled with ochre, orange and grey shading that gives it a faded, well-loved look. Dark grass blades and soft shadow at the base ground the figure against the arm.

The rabbit was never meant to be left in the long grass behind the allotments, but that is where Aunt Vesna found it on the Tuesday after the funeral, one ear folded under and dew soaking through the patched ochre of its belly. She brought it home in a carrier bag, smelling of compost and rain, and set it on the draining board so the cat would leave it alone.

Its name was Mr Dunmore, stitched in faded red thread along the inside of one foot, though nobody in the house could remember who had sewn it. The button eye had lost its shank years ago and now rattled loose in its socket whenever the kettle boiled. Vesna said it was like having a tiny clock in the kitchen. She did not say the rest, which was that she had taken the rabbit off the top of the wardrobe in March and carried it to the park, meaning to sit it on a bench for some child to find, and had walked home without it.
She mended the left seam on Thursday with a needle from the tin in the dresser drawer. The stitches came out crooked, sprouting like thorns along the edge. When she held the rabbit up to the window and turned its head to see, the light caught the button and for a moment it looked straight at her, as if it had been waiting in the grass for her to come back and fetch it properly.
