Fox head with pink flowers on an upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A realistic red fox head faces towards the viewer, with shaded fur, amber eyes and a black nose, set against grey shading. Gold scrollwork curls up beside the face and pink five-petal flowers with red berries and green-gold leaves sit at the lower edge. Bold black outlines frame each element on the pale skin.

By the third hour of your shift the last lorry has gone over the bridge, and the only traffic left at Harrow Ford is a fox trotting up to the barrier as though it has booked a slot. You lean out of the booth with your torch. Its eyes catch the light and hold it, amber and unbothered. Behind it the hedgerow is full of wild roses, pale in the thin spring dark.

'Nationality?' you say, because the form asks. The fox sits. It does not offer a passport. Instead it sets down, very neatly on the wet tarmac, a sprig of hedge flowers, five pink petals to each bloom and three red berries at the base, and then it looks at you as if that settles everything.
Your supervisor, Dorothy Vane, would have had a rule for this. You have only the rubber stamp, a dry ink pad and a ledger with a cracked spine. You press the stamp to the cover of the ledger, not the sprig. The mark comes up green-gold, a curl like the scroll on a wrought gate. The fox inclines its head, lifts the barrier with one forepaw as if it has always known the trick, and trots off into the field where the roses are.
In the morning the ledger shows an entry in your own handwriting that you do not remember writing: one arrival, one departure, no fee. Beside it, pressed flat and fading, lie five pink petals.
