Realistic tiger face on a calf

Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A large tiger face fills the calf, looking straight at the viewer with striking blue eyes. The fur is shaded in soft greys and black with fine whisker detail, and dark stripes wrap around the edges of the design. The leg is photographed head-on against a plain wall and tiled floor, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tiger came to the Ashcombe Lower School reunion through the side door, which the caretaker had propped open with a dented bucket, and it stood on the parquet as though it had been expected. Mrs Pell, who had taught most of the room to read, put down her sherry and did not scream. Her husband had always said she could not be frightened by anything that had not first sat in her class.

The tiger did not eat anyone. It walked the length of the hall, past the trestle tables and the class photographs pinned to the cork board, and stopped before each face. Those who had been cruel at nine it regarded for a long time, its blue eyes steady and unblinking. Those who had been kind it passed with a slow swish of its tail. Derek Vance, who had once put a frog in Janet Moss's satchel, felt the tiger's breath on his wrists and found he could not lift his cup.

Mrs Pell asked the tiger what it wanted. It said it wanted only what every school wanted, which was a register, and it opened its jaws to show her the names written along its gums in faded biro. Her own name was there, and beside it the year 1961 and a word she did not remember writing.

They read the names aloud until the hall went quiet, and by the last one Derek was crying into his squash. The tiger curled beneath the stage and slept. In the morning the caretaker found the bucket moved and a single striped hair lying on the windowsill, and he swept it into the bin with the crisp packets, which was what the school had always done with things it did not understand.
