Watercolour tiger head on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A tiger's head faces the camera, with orange fur, black stripes and bright amber eyes rendered in soft, blended shading. Blue and teal paint-like drips run down from beneath the face, with dark ink splatter dots scattered around the muzzle and top of the head. The tattoo sits on a calf against a dark, out-of-focus background.

The tiger came down from the hills the week before the wedding, because the bride's grandmother had painted it on the cottage wall with river clay and blue dye from the indigo vats, and the paint had started to run. Nobody in Cwm Teg had seen a tiger, but everyone agreed the wall had got wet and was weeping colour onto the lane, and that a thing painted that carelessly would walk off on its own feet if nobody watched it.

Tomos the carter found it first, sitting in the middle of the ford with the water going blue around its paws. Its eyes were amber, the colour of the lamp oil his mother kept on the windowsill, and when he shouted at it the tiger only turned its head and looked at him as though he were the one who had come out of a painting. He asked it what it wanted. It said nothing, but the ink spots on its brow rose and fell like breathing.
Then the grandmother walked down with a bucket and a stiff brush, and the tiger stood up and let her wash its face. She talked to it the whole time about cloth and cake and the price of salt, and by the time the water had gone muddy the stripes had settled into black and gold again. Tomos said she had painted it too wet. She said she had painted it lonely, and she led it up the hill to the wedding barn where a fire was burning for the dancing. There it lay by the door all night, watching the blue drips run down from the rafters like a second, quieter dance.
