The eagle-owl came to the lighthouse at Scarrow Head the winter the keeper's boy went missing, and it sat on the iron rail of the lamp gallery with its ear-tufts flat and its two blue eyes fixed on the sea. Nobody in the village would go up to the gallery after dark. Old Mab Trent, who cooked for the fishing crews and had buried two husbands, carried a pan of barley broth up the four hundred steps herself, because she said a bird that wanted watching was owed a meal.

She set the bowl on the rail and talked to it the way she talked to the crews, low and without fuss. She told it the boy had gone out in a borrowed coble to check a net and the fog had come down like a lid. She told it the men had searched until their hands bled on the rocks. The owl turned its head one way, then the other, and did not eat. When the fog thinned at last, Mab saw a single lantern bobbing far out past the skerries, low on the water, and she knew the owl had been looking at it all along.

She lit the big lamp herself and kept it burning until dawn, feeding the wick with her own hands. By morning the boy was sitting on the shingle at the foot of the cliff, cold but breathing, and the owl had gone from the rail. Only the broth was left, cold and untouched, with a single grey feather floating on top like a spoon.
