Fox, peacock feather and flowers on feet
Other · Colour · Photo
Three photographs show two feet with colour tattoos. One foot carries a cartoon fox cub beside a peacock feather and pink flowers, shown from two angles, and the other carries a cartoon lion cub with red flowers and green leaves. The linework is bold and outlined, with flat colour fills and soft shading, and the reds, greens and blues dominate the composition.

The peacock at Carrow Keep had been dead a hundred years, but its feathers still turned up in the nettles below the broken west wall, and the young fox Tamsin found them first. She was a cub with more curiosity than sense, and when the lion cub Ossory came up the scree with his chest puffed out, she was already tying a green eye-feather into her collar.

"That feather is mine," Ossory said. "My grandfather's hunting party drove the peacock off the battlements, so everything in that moat belongs to the lion line." Tamsin laughed and said the moat belonged to the frogs. They argued until the sun went red behind the keep, and the old bell in the tower, cracked and green with age, rang once by itself.
Inside the keep they found a room where the floor had fallen away and wild roses grew up through the rubble, pink and red, with a stone path leading to a doorway that had no wall around it. Ossory wanted to go through first. Tamsin said a door like that was a trick. Whoever went through it, the old women in the village said, came out a year older, or with the wrong name.
They went through together, holding paws, and came out at the bottom of the hill with the feather still in Tamsin's collar and a red rose tucked behind Ossory's ear. Nobody in the village could say how long they had been gone. The bell rang once more behind them, and neither of them looked back, and that, the village says, is how the feather came to be sewn into a coat that no one has ever seen.
