Maneki-neko and blossom on a foot

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A purple maneki-neko lucky cat with a winking eye and pink cheeks sits at the centre, wearing a red collar and a beige bib, and holds a small orange and black cat figure in one paw. Pink flowers sit on its head and around it, with falling petals scattered across the design. Bold dark outlines and flat, bright colour fills give it a cartoon-like finish, and the design is shown on the top of a bare foot against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hana had swept the step of the sweet shop for an hour when the cat on the windowsill winked at her. It had sat there for nine years, its raised paw tilted towards the lane, and no one on Kurumi Street had ever seen it do anything but beckon. Now the paw had swung round, pointing past the well and over the wooden bridge, where the cherry trees were dropping petals onto the water faster than the current could carry them away.

Hana put down her broom and went. On the bridge a fishmonger's boy called Ren sat with his back against the rail, turning a small carved calico cat over and over in his fingers. His father had lost the nets to a gambler in the spring. Ren had been trying since dawn to sell the little carving to anyone who would stop, and so far only the crows had looked at it.

'It's not for sale,' he said, when she held out her last two coins. 'It's for luck, and I've had none.'

'The cat told me to find you,' Hana said, which was a foolish thing to say to a boy on a bridge, and she felt her cheeks go hot. Ren laughed for the first time that week. He tucked the carving into her palm, she pressed the coins into his, and neither of them mentioned the price again.

By evening the petals had drifted into the teacups on the sweet shop counter, and the cat on the windowsill had gone back to waving at the lane as if nothing had ever happened. Hana kept the little calico on the shelf beside it, and she never once swept the step without glancing towards the bridge.
