The bold outlines and flat fills are in colour, with orange, green, pink and skin-toned ink, against a beige carpeted background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fire woman had burned down three sheds before the boy in the white hat came up the lane with a bucket and no sense at all. He did not throw water on her. He sat on the wall and asked what she was for, and she said she was for keeping the cold out of other people's houses, and that nobody had ever asked about her own. He said he would ask again tomorrow, and he did.

He came back the next evening and the next. Each time he brought something small and foolish: a bent teaspoon, a jar of blackberries, a pink paper heart folded so many times it had gone soft as cloth. She hated every one of them. She kept them all on the stone sill of the byre, where the heat from her hair scorched the paper brown at the edges, and still he came up the lane with his bucket and his questions.

At the wedding in late summer the hedges hummed with bees and the trestle tables stood out on the green. The bride's hair burned low so the guests could see their plates. The boy had stitched his hat from an old flour sack, and when the vicar asked for the ring he held out the bent teaspoon instead. Everybody laughed, and she laughed hardest, and sparks rose off her shoulders in a little rush of gold that set the bunting swaying.

The scorched hearts are still pinned along the byre sill, brown as toast. Their grandchildren pass the teaspoon from hand to hand at every christening, and the fire woman holds the youngest on her knee so the child can warm its fingers in the light off her hair.
