Free script with birds on the collarbone
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a black script tattoo on the upper chest near the collarbone, spelling the word free with three small birds in flight rising from the final stroke. The linework is thin and smooth, with solid black ink and no shading. The skin tone is warm and the background is out of focus, with a red garment edge and zip visible at the lower right.

Grandfather had called it the end of a sentence nobody had finished.

At the first well a woman was drawing water and asked what he was. He said he was nobody's, and she laughed and said that was the same as being free, though it cost you your supper. She pointed him toward the salt flats, where debtors cut white blocks for the ships, and warned him that the overseer counted every hand twice.
On the flats he watched swallows dip over the evaporation pans. Each evening he drew the word in the crust with a stick, and each morning the wind filled it in. The overseer caught him at it and asked what it said. Ioannis told him, and the man scoffed, then stood a long while looking at the tail of the letters, where three small birds were lifting off the final stroke as if they had been waiting for permission.
The overseer unlocked the chain that night and said he could not read, so the word would have to be somebody else's to keep. Ioannis walked north without his sack. Some say the birds followed him all the way home. His mother never once asked where the salt had gone.
