Black typewriter-style lettering reading wild and free across the side of the ribs, partly covered by a black top.

Wild and free lettering on the side ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo spells out the words wild and free in a typewriter-style serif typeface, with an ampersand between them. The letters are solid black ink with clean, even edges and slightly uneven fill. The text runs diagonally across pale skin, with a dark garment at the top edge and a plain background on the right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Marion, the post boat came in on Tuesday with your parcel, and I have read your letter four times standing in the doorway of the oil store, which is the only place on Skerry Point where the wind cannot reach the paper. You ask whether I am lonely out here. I am not, not in the way you mean. There is the gull that steals the bread from the sill, and there is Mr Tully who rows over with the fish on Thursdays and tells me the mainland has gone mad about motorcars. I have been practising the old machine every evening, the Imperial with the sticking e, and I have typed the same two words so many times the keys have grown quite fond of them. Wild and free. Nobody on the mainland would think to write it so plainly, but the words came out crooked on the page the first time, the way things do when the sea is shoving at the glass. I pinned the sheet above the stove. Father would have called it foolishness. He is in the churchyard now and the wind has stopped asking his permission for anything. Come in August, if the boat allows. Bring your good shoes. The rocks are slippery and the view from the top of the stair is worth a broken ankle.
