Beyond fear lies freedom script with birds on back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the words Beyond fear lies freedom in a flowing black script, split over two lines, with three small bird silhouettes flying upward to the right of the text. The linework is fine and even, in black ink only, set against smooth skin. The close, slightly angled shot places the design centre frame, with dark hair falling across the top right corner.

Don't you look at me like that, love. I know what the harbour says about my brother. Then one March the lifeboat men were short of hands, and Bert Coad came round to our door with his cap twisted in his fists. Len said no before Bert had finished. Mother had the kettle on and the good cups out, and still Len said no. I watched from the scullery window with a tea towel in my hands, the sky going the colour of pewter over the breakwater, and the gulls lifting off the rail one after another as if someone had called them.

He walked down to the slipway that night without a word. The next morning I found a line of chalk on the wall, copied off the board on the lifeboat house, the letters all leaning forward as though they were in a hurry: Beyond fear lies freedom. Underneath, somebody had drawn three small birds heading out past the light.

Len came back on the Thursday with salt in his beard and a hole in his sleeve. He didn't say much. He sat on the wall and tossed out a crust, and the torn-winged gull took it right out of the air. I suppose that's the whole of it. He got in the boat when the thing needed doing, and the birds never once looked back at him.
