Freedom script tattoo on a finger

Lettering · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with a small tattoo on one finger, reading the word Freedom in cursive script. A small dark blue bird shape sits at the end of the lettering. The linework is fine and the ink appears solid, with the background showing pale skin and mint green painted nails.

Teodor, who had come over on the Gdansk boats with one suitcase and a grudge against the dock foremen, unfolded it at the bench under the lamp. The word was written in a looping hand, slanted like driven rain: Freedom. Beside it someone had pressed a small blue bird in ink, wings half raised, as if it had been caught in the middle of a sentence.

Mrs Pargeter read it twice and laughed, which she did rarely. 'Her mother wrote that,' she said. 'Forty years back, when the girls still posted letters from the pier. Never sent it. Kept the bird for a sign she'd got clear of the place.'

They opened the cage at the harbour wall at dusk. The linnet sat on the rail, considered the water for a long while, then dropped low over the boats, a blue fleck against the grey. Teodor kept the paper in his breast pocket after that, and every morning he checked that it was still there, as if it might also decide to leave.
