Small love script tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black script word, love, sits along the side of one extended finger of a hand held in a peace sign. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering in a flowing handwritten style. The image is in warm, muted tones, with the skin and dark painted nails set against a blurred teal background with pale bokeh circles.

The wireless set had gone quiet again by the time the pilot cutter showed its lamp off Holyhead, and I sat with the form on my knee, pencil chewed flat, counting the cost of a single word. Telegraph offices in Liverpool charged by the word, and I had three shillings and a thin wad of wages to spend before the Cairn Lass made port. Mr Pryce, the second mate, leaned in the doorway smoking and said I could send the whole of the Twenty-third Psalm for what I was fumbling over.

I wrote the word small, the way my mother wrote her shopping lists, joined up so it looked like it was still being said. Love. I crossed out nothing, because there was nothing else I could afford to be sorry about. The operator at the coast station tapped it back to me in a flat voice and asked if I wanted it sent to Kathleen Doyle, Kilmore Road. I said yes, and that she would know it was from me without the name.
Three days later her reply came up the wire in the wet dark, the harbour lamps smeared across the glass like spilt sweets. One word, paid for by somebody else who had also been counting her pennies. Her answer was the same word, written the same way, and I read it four times in the galley with the kettle boiling dry.
Pryce asked what it said. I held the flimsy up to the lamp so he could see the loops of the letters. 'Cheap at the price,' he said, and went back out into the spray.
