Freedom script with a small bird on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with the fingers held together, showing the word Freedom in black cursive script along one finger, with a small solid black bird silhouette to its right. The lettering and bird are rendered in thin, even black linework with little shading, and the skin is light with a soft, neutral beige background. The composition is centred on the finger, with mint green nail polish visible on the fingertips.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming off the canvas awnings since six, and by eleven my cardboard price tags had gone soft as bread. I sold secondhand birdcages on Sundays at the Tanner Street market, which nobody on the stalls either side of me found funny. Gerald, who sells cracked mugs and strong opinions, says the cages are a sort of cruelty. I tell him they are only empty rooms waiting for a tenant.

A girl came by with her hood up and stopped at the wire domes stacked against the bollard. She had a biro behind one ear and a torn ferry ticket folded in her palm. She asked whether any of the cages had doors that still swung true. I said the brass one did, the little Victorian thing with a ring on top. She tried it, opened and shut it three times, and laughed at the sound it made, a small clean click like a ship's bell.

She paid four pounds in coins she counted out slowly from a biscuit tin, then asked if I had anything to put inside. I had a sparrow I'd been meaning to let go for a week, taken in from a boy who swore it had flown into his shed. I offered it to her in newspaper. She shook her head and said she only wanted the door.

When the rain stopped, I found the brass cage on the wet cobbles outside my pitch, its door hanging wide. On the counter she had left the ferry ticket, and on the back in pencil she had written one word, then drawn a quick ink bird beside it, as if she had been practising.
