French script quote lettering design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A drawing of a quote in flowing black script across three lines, with decorative swashes on the capital A and the closing apostrophe. The text reads 'À toi, pour toujours' in French. Solid black strokes with varied thick and thin lines sit on a plain white background, with no shading or colour.

You find the card in the glovebox of the hire car, tucked under a map of Nevada nobody has unfolded since 1994. The paper is cream and soft at the corners, and across the front, in ink gone the colour of weak tea, someone has written À toi, pour toujours. You do not speak French. You know Marguerite did, and that she only reached for it when she meant something she was afraid to say in English.

The road runs straight out of Baker for forty-one miles with nothing on either side but creosote and heat shimmer. You pull over where a dead Joshua tree leans across the verge and read the card again. Inside there is no name, only a pressed sprig of something grey and a ticket stub from a diner in Barstow, dated the week before the wedding that never happened.

You think about turning back. The fuel gauge says you have a hundred and six miles left, more than enough to reach the town she always said she would move to, the one with the blue water tower and nobody who knew either of you. You fold the card along its old crease, slide it behind the sun visor where the light cannot fade it further, and start the engine. The gravel pops under the tyres. Somewhere ahead the road bends out of sight, and you keep your eyes on the place where it disappears.
