Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the French phrase je t'aime written in flowing black calligraphic script on a plain white background. Long swashes extend from the j and the final e, with a loop above and a curl below the lettering. The design is solid black linework with no shading or colour, and the phrase sits centrally within the frame.

The snow had already closed the lower road when Marguerite found the envelope wedged under the refuge door, its corner soaked dark. Nobody had come up the Col du Frêne Noir in three days. The hand on the front was all loops and tails, the sort a schoolmaster teaches before he gives up on a boy, and it was addressed to Mademoiselle Solène Aubriet, Lanesse, par le col.

She turned it over. The flap had been sealed with a thumbprint of wax, and beneath the seal, in the same looping ink, someone had written two words that were not an address at all. Je t'aime, the lines ran, the j dropping its tail down the paper like a rope let out over a ledge, the e at the end flicking up and around as if it could not decide to stop. Marguerite had buried a husband on the far side of this mountain. She knew what a letter like that cost to write and how little it cost to carry.
She had until the light went to decide. Her boots were still wet from the morning, and the path down was a grey ribbon already hidden by drift. She tied the envelope inside her coat, against the wool over her ribs, and checked the knots twice. Behind her the refuge stove ticked as it cooled, and the wind found the gap under the shutter and whistled one flat note.
Halfway down, where the path doubled back on itself in four tight hairpins, she stopped and took the letter out again. Her fingers were numb. She did not open it. She simply held it to the grey light and read the words once more, the way you check a bridge before you cross it, and then she went on down towards Lanesse with the paper warm against her heart.
