Fresh geometric lattice tattoo on skin
Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A freshly applied black tattoo forms a triangular geometric design of small diamond and lattice shapes with long diagonal lines radiating outwards. The linework is solid and bold, and the ink looks wet and glossy on the surface of the skin. The tattoo fills the left-to-centre of the frame, with a blurred gloved hand at the top left and warm skin tones around it.

Dad never let me near the net shed when the ink was still wet, but that July he sat me on an upturned creel and set the pattern board across my knees. Uncle Ruairi had chalked the lattice onto the mesh the week before: a web of small diamonds, with long diagonals running off the edge like rays from a sinking sun. It was his mother's design, and every boat out of Peterhead had some version of it painted above the wheelhouse. Nobody in our family had ever worn it, so I asked why not. Ruairi laughed and said the sea would mark us soon enough.

Three days out on the Brenda Mae the trawl came up heavy and knotted. We knelt on the wet deck picking twine from the cod end while the swell lifted and dropped us, and I kept seeing the diamonds in the tangle, each one a small gap where something had nearly got away. Ruairi cut a loop free with his knife and told me the trick was never to fight a knot. You followed the line along until it chose to give.
We came home with a poor haul and a split thumb. That night in the shed, Ruairi drew the pattern again on a square of sailcloth with a fine brush and a pot of black, his hand steady as a plumb line. The long diagonals, he said, were there to show which way the boat was going home when the lights ashore disappeared. I still have that square folded in my coat pocket. It has gone as soft as an old sleeve, and every time I unfold it the diamonds look a little more like the way back.
