Friend and ship script on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo reads friend above and ship below in a looping cursive script, with a simple outlined ship crossing between the words. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading or fill. The photograph is taken close up on a pale forearm with a rolled denim sleeve at the top edge and a soft, blurred background.

Dear Tomas,

The yard foreman says the Marigold goes down the slip on Thursday, and I have told no one but you that I cut her first plank with my father's adze instead of the one they issued me. You will remember the day. You sat on the stack of ash timber eating a pear, telling me her bilge would be too fat and she would never stand up to a squall. You were right about the bilge. I have fixed it, though not the way you would have.
The chandler's boy wants paying in coins, not promises, so I have been selling the rope you left in my shed. I am not angry about it, Tomas. I know you meant it for the boat. I kept the knot you tied on the mooring line, the one that never slips, and I am working it into the bow rail so whoever sails her after me has something to argue with.
Come to the launch. Bring a pear. If the tide turns against us we will wait on the sea wall and you can tell me again how she will sink. I would rather hear you be wrong beside me than be right anywhere else.
Yours, with salt in my collar, Anselm
