Three chevrons on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop shows a man in a rolled denim shirt with his arms folded, displaying a small tattoo of three open chevrons pointing right on the forearm. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the chevrons are spaced evenly in a row. The ink is black on a neutral light background, and the composition centres the tattoo across the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The third chevron had gone soft in the rain by the time Mara Oduya came back along the Tesso road with a bucket of lime slung over one shoulder. Her grandmother had painted the first three on the flat face of the red boulder at the bend, all pointing east, because the cistern at Harrow Well lay under the shelf of rock beyond it, and anyone walking out of the dry country with a cracked tongue needed to be told which way the water was.

The drovers who used the road called the marks arrows, though her grandmother had always said they were only a hand pointing the way a person ought to go. A man called Silas Pell came through in the cold season with three goats and a bad knee and asked her, politely enough, why anyone should trust a painted sign. Mara said a sign was only as good as the person who kept it, and she had kept this one for eleven years. He laughed, thanked her for the lime, and went on east, following the chevrons because they were the only thing on the flats that agreed with one another.

The dust came in the third week of the dry month, a wall the colour of weak tea. Mara went out with the bucket and her thumb-width brush, found the boulder by feel, and painted the chevrons again, each one a little longer than the last so the arms would show in grey light. When the wind dropped she heard a goat bell somewhere to the east, then a man's voice counting his animals one by one. She sat down on the warm stone. It was the first time in eleven years she had not needed to see the water to know it was there.
