A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Frost had drawn ferns on the inside of the milking parlour window again, and Ruth stood with the bucket cooling in her hand, not wanting to breathe on the glass and spoil them. Her father had always called frost lazy work, all curl and no purpose, and he would have scraped it away with the edge of a feed scoop by now. He was in the front room with the wireless, asleep in his chair, and the farm had gone quiet around him the way it had since October.

The brush was in the drawer of the tack room where it had always been, wrapped in a twist of greased paper. Ruth found it looking for twine. Her uncle Bert had painted the name board over the gate for thirty years, WHITLOW FARM in red with a black shadow, and at the end of every board he finished with one loose, looping stroke that never quite joined the letter it came from. Nobody had asked him why. He said a board without a flourish looked like a man who had forgotten his manners.

She tried the stroke on a scrap of tin at the bench by the stove. The first attempts were stiff. The third curled back on itself like a wood shaving, and she laughed, surprised by the sound in the empty kitchen. She practised until the light went blue on the snow, until her wrist ached and the curl came out clean, a single line that turned twice and stopped short of nothing.

In the morning she carried the ladder out to the gate. The paint was flaking and the board was cold, but she added a small flourish beneath the old name, a thin black loop tucked in the corner where the weather would take longest to reach it. Her father would see it when he woke. He would say the frost had got in, and she would let him.
