Frog with eye inside a black diamond on upper arm

Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Two photographs show the same tattoo of a frog with outstretched limbs, with an eye set in its body and enclosed by a solid black diamond. The left image shows a smaller version on an upper arm, and the right shows a larger version with more detail. The linework is built from fine stippled dots that shade the frog's skin, with solid black fill for the diamond, and the image uses only black ink and grey tones.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide has been out for an hour and the rock pools behind the chapel are full of things that want to be looked at, so you crouch with your knees in the weed and wait for the one you came for. You were told it lives under the flat stone where a diamond of white lime marks the old boundary. Your grandmother called the frogs of Scarra Holm the island's watchers, and said that anyone who lifted a stone without asking would be seen by the eye they carried.

The frog comes out slowly, as if it had been counting you. Its legs are long and pale and its fingers spread like someone reaching for a rail in fog. On its back, set in the soft middle where a heart would sit, is a single eye, wet and amber, with a slit so narrow it could be a closed door. You have heard the story a dozen times and never believed a word of it, yet the eye turns, and you feel the whole shoreline turn with it: the gulls, the lighthouse lamp that has not yet been lit.

You do not take it. That is the first rule, and the one your grandmother never managed to keep. Instead you lower the stone back exactly as it was, press the damp weed flat, and walk up the path with the sea behind you. At the cottage the kettle is already warm. Your mother asks where you have been, and you tell her the truth, which is that you were looked at and found acceptable.
