Geometric crystal tattoo on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical geometric emblem with a diamond-shaped centre, chevron cut-outs and a vertical bar, with faceted crystal points hanging below. The shading is built from dense stippled dots, giving the diamond and lower facets a soft grey gradient. Two forearms are shown side by side against a dark grey background, with the larger tattoo on the nearer arm and a smaller version on the other.

Dear Tom,

The 4.12 came in without you again, so I am writing this on the back of the Sunday timetable while I wait under the clock at Thornley Road. Mr Pilling has locked the ticket hatch and gone home to his tea, and the platform lamps are buzzing like a row of wasps. You will say I should have gone with him. I told him I would mind the parcel for the Halifax man, which is true, though the parcel is only Father's old theodolite box and nobody is coming for it.
The box has been on the bench since Tuesday. I opened it this afternoon to check the brass for damp, and folded inside the lid was the drawing Father made the winter before he went down the Scarr shaft. You remember it: the diamond with two chevrons cut into its shoulders, the upright bar splitting it like a plumb line, and the points hanging underneath like frost on a gutter. He shaded the diamond in dots, thousands of them, with the nib of his pen. He said it was the grit from the cutting, and that if you looked at enough of it the grey came up out of nothing.
I walked down to the footbridge afterwards to see whether the ironwork matched. It does. Someone at the foundry must have cast the same emblem into the parapet, and the dots have worn smooth under a century of gloves, so that in the lamplight the diamond looks like a window with the sky behind it. The 4.12 is due again at nine. I will take the box with me this time, and the drawing too, and I will show you where the grey comes up out of nothing.
Love, Ada
