Nested diamond tattoos on two forearms

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are shown side by side in a black and white photograph, each with a geometric tattoo of stacked, overlapping diamonds. The larger tattoo on the left arm is built from solid dark centres surrounded by lighter stippled outlines, while the smaller version on the right arm repeats the same arrangement. The soft grey background and even lighting keep the focus on the fine dot shading and the symmetry between the two designs.

Dear Ruth,

The plan came back from the surveyor on Tuesday, and I have been staring at it since. He has drawn the walled garden at Scarrow Hall as a set of diamonds, one inside another, each shaded with thousands of tiny dots so the paper seems to breathe. The outer rhombus is pale, the next darker, and the innermost is so thick with ink that his pen must have nearly gone through. He says Lady Haddon wants the beds laid out to match it exactly. I told him the box hedges will not hold a point that sharp, and he only smiled and tapped the centre with his nib.

Every morning since, I have walked the gravel paths with a measuring cord and a bag of lime, pegging out the corners. The lines do not care for the wind. By noon the cord has twisted, and the diamonds I pegged at breakfast sit a hand's width off true. Mr Pell, who has tended these walls for forty years, watches me from the potting shed and says nothing, which is his way of saying I am a fool.

Yesterday I stopped fussing and simply knelt at the centre bed, where the ink is darkest, and pressed my palm into the soil. It was cold beneath the top layer, and damp, and when I lifted my hand the print was a small perfect diamond, sharp at every edge. I laughed out loud, alone among the cabbages. Perhaps the surveyor knew something after all. Come up at Michaelmas and I will show you. Bring your good boots.

Yours, Eliza
