Frog with sun and moon design
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A frog silhouette with a thick black outline and splayed toe pads is filled with separate panels of imagery, including a smiling sun with a face, a crescent moon, stars, a peace symbol and zigzag patterns. The linework is bold and even, with the inner designs shaded in saturated colour. The frog is centred on a plain patch of skin, with the design filling most of the frame.

Our Eli came back from the mill pond with a jam jar and a frog that would not sit still. It was the colour of a fairground lamp, black-edged all round like a schoolbook drawing, and when Mum set it on the draining board it spread its toes wide and looked at us as though we owed it rent. Dad said it was a toad in fancy dress. Eli said it had the sun in its belly, and nobody believed him until the kitchen went gold at four in the afternoon with the blind still down.

Nan had the story from her own nan, who lived out past Haddon Cross where the lanes turned to mud. The frog, she said, had once swallowed the whole sky by accident, gulping down the day like a bad oyster, and the sky had settled into him in pieces. The sun sat on his chest with a face, grinning at the moon tucked under one leg. Stars crowded his back. Zigzag rain ran down his shins. A small round peace sign sat where his heart would be, which Nan said was the only piece he had chosen for himself.
Dad wanted the thing gone, so on Saturday we walked it back to the mill pond at first light. Eli held the jar up to the reeds and unscrewed the lid. The frog didn't leap. It turned its head, looked at the water, then at Eli, and the sun on its chest winked once before it dropped into the green.
That evening the kitchen was dark and ordinary, and Mum filled the kettle without reaching for the switch. But on the lino, where the frog had sat, a warm yellow patch lay in the shape of a small webbed foot, and it stayed there all winter no matter how hard Dad scrubbed.
