A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mo Halloran had been driving the Sandbank road for three hours when the frog came hopping out of the heat shimmer and stopped dead in the middle of the tarmac, as if it had an appointment. It was patterned like a fairground carousel, ringed in black, and its belly held a painted sun with a face so pleased with itself that Mo nearly laughed. She braked, stepped out, and the air hit her like an oven door.

The frog did not hop away. It regarded her with the patience of a creature that had crossed deserts before, then leapt towards the verge where a dry culvert ran under the road. Mo followed, clutching her water bottle, half expecting the animal to vanish. Instead she found a shallow pool in the cracked clay, no bigger than a bathtub, ringed with reeds that should not have been alive. A crescent moon trembled on its surface, though the sky above was still white with noon.
An old man sat on a folding stool beside the water, a tin of brushes at his feet. He said his name was Ibrahim Vell and that he had painted the frog himself, years ago, to stop the sun and moon quarrelling over the sky. "Every part of him is a promise," he said. "The stars are for the nights you lose your way. The flowers are for the seasons when it rains." He tapped the peace sign on the frog's leg. "This one is for the drivers who stop."
Mo filled her bottle from the pool and drove on with it wedged between her knees. In the mirror the old man was still painting, and far behind him a small green shape sat on the warm tarmac, waiting for the next car to slow down.
