Colourful geometric patchwork-style cat tattoo with small paw prints trailing behind it, on the outer thigh.

Patchwork cat with paw prints on the thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A standing cat silhouette is filled with angular patches of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple, separated by black outlines, giving a stained-glass or patchwork look. A trail of small paw prints in matching colours follows behind the cat along the skin. The tattoo sits on the outer thigh, with denim visible at the top of the frame and the cat facing right.

Brother Anselm had cut the blue for the third time before he noticed the cat had walked through the offcuts again, leaving a line of small coloured prints across the bench from the red shard to the purple one. "Get her off the lead," he said, but Mother Pell, who kept the almonry cats, only laughed from the doorway with a basket of eels.

The window was the east lancet of the chapter house, and the prior wanted it mended before the feast of St Hilda. Half of it had come down in the winter gale. What remained was a patchwork of saints' robes and borders, and the gap where a figure of a standing beast had once been. Nobody living remembered what the beast was meant to be. The old drawing in the muniment room showed only a black outline and a note in faded ink: "the cat of the lower cloister, as she was."

So Anselm drew her again, from life. The cat, whom the brothers called Vespers because she appeared at dusk and vanished at Compline, sat for him on the warm flags while he traced her shape in charcoal. She would not hold still for long. Each time she rose and stretched, he had to begin the tail again, and each time she stopped at the bench to inspect his glass, leaving her small coloured tracks where the ground pigment had settled on her paws.

On the last morning he cut the final patches to fit, then watched her cross the bench one more time and jump through the open frame into the sun. The glass caught her shape as she moved. Anselm set the leads and said nothing, because the prior would want a saint, and the cat had already made her own.
