Fine line black tattoo of a full moon above two crescent moons cradled in open hands, on the inner forearm.

Full moon and two crescent moons on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a circled full moon with a few small crater marks, floating above two crescent moons resting in a pair of open, outstretched hands. The linework is thin and mostly black, with light grey shading on the fingers and palms. The design is small and centred on the inner forearm against plain pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had been told twice already that the moons were not his to carry, but the tinker's boy had left them in the scriptorium drawer with a note that said only *for the one who keeps the hours*, and so on the third night of the thaw he took them up the bell stair with his lantern clamped in his teeth.

The tower was colder than the cloister and smelt of rope tallow and pigeon. At the top, where the bell hung like a sleeping animal, a single window faced east over the valley. Anselm set the two crescents on the sill, one either side of the lantern. They were thin as paring knives and pale as the inside of a pear. He had expected them to roll away, but they sat easy, cupped as if the sill were a pair of open palms.

Above the ridge the full moon came up slow and lopsided, pocked with the same small craters he had counted in an astronomy book as a novice. Anselm found himself holding his own hands out flat beneath it, the way the abbot did when he blessed the bread. Nothing fell. The crescents gave a little and settled.

When the bell rang for matins at dawn, Anselm was still there, his fingers gone numb. Below, Brother Oswin was shouting that the feast-day window was bare and the moons had gone missing. Anselm said nothing. He tucked his hands into his sleeves and let the light come up over the hills, and for once he did not ask who had sent them.
