Crescent moon and leaf sprig on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black outline of a crescent moon sits at the top of the design, with a straight line crossing its hollow and small dots beside it. Below, a sprig of two leaves hangs from a curved stem, trailed by two outlined diamonds and a dot. The ink is solid black on pale skin against a plain light background.

His daughter Nessa drew little sprigs of sea-holly in the margins of his charts, two leaves on a bent stem. She said the diamonds were the buoys and the dots were the gulls that followed them. He told her gulls were not navigation. She told him the gulls had never once been wrong about weather.

The night the fleet came in short, he stood at the wheel with the compass needle swinging across the hollow of the moon, the line through it steady as a bearing. Two boats were still out beyond the bar. He turned the Marigold toward the last diamond of light on the water and counted the phosphorescent dots one by one until the swell ran smooth under the keel.

At dawn Nessa was waiting on the quay with a flask and her arms folded. Both boats were tied up. She looked at the moon going pale over the breakwater and said nothing, which from her was a kind of thanks.
