Galaxy anatomical heart on a thigh
Thigh · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo of an anatomical heart with visible vessels sits on the upper thigh. The top half is shaded in black and grey linework, while the lower body is filled with blue, violet and pink gradients, small white stars and a blue pixel checkerboard patch. The subject is framed from the hip down, with a white top and black lace underwear visible beside the tattoo.

Walter Dunn kept the night watch at the gasworks in Hollin Bridge, and every evening he drew the sky on the backs of spent gas bills because his wife said he would not sleep otherwise. The drawings were no use for navigation. Every one of them came out shaped like a heart.

Irene Halloran came up the hill one wet Tuesday with a cardboard box that had belonged to her late husband, the doctor. Inside were anatomy plates, pen and ink, the vessels picked out in fine black lines like brambles grown over a gate. She asked if Walter could make something of them for the surgery wall. He looked at the top half of the heart, all tangled and grey, and said he would colour the bottom half from the sky, if she didn't mind the sky being a bit untidy.
He worked through the winter with a paintbox borrowed from the village school. Violet went into the chambers first, then a blue so deep it looked wet, then a pink that ran along the main vessel like a lamp left on in a window. Where he lost patience he laid a checkerboard of small blue squares, one for each night the town had sat in the blackout and counted the stars by hand. He dotted white for every star he could name and some he made up.
When the sheet was finished, Irene held it to the window for a long time and said nothing. Then she folded it into her coat and told him the stars were in the wrong order, and he was not to fix them. On the next gas bill Walter drew one small blue square where the lamp had gone out, and sent it up the hill without a stamp.
